I kept their appointment book, but I also kept their biggest secret
I've worked as the receptionist and salon manager at the same nail salon for eight years.

Our owners are a married couple.

To customers, they look like the perfect team.

They're polite.

They treat employees well.

They pay on time.

His wife is honestly one of the kindest people I've ever met.

That's why what I've watched over the years has been so hard to ignore.

As the receptionist, I schedule appointments, answer calls, and handle almost everything that happens at the front desk.

Without trying, I notice patterns.

One pattern never changed.

Whenever we hired a single mom, the owner somehow became extra helpful.

He'd offer to fix her car.

He'd buy her lunch.

He'd tell her not to worry if she needed an advance on her paycheck.

He'd even volunteer to drive her home if her car was in the shop.

At first, I thought he was simply generous.

Then I noticed something else.

Those same technicians started taking long lunches with him.

On their days off, he'd suddenly disappear for a few hours too.

Whenever his wife asked where he was, he'd say he was meeting suppliers or looking at salon equipment.

I was usually the one covering the front desk while he was gone.

One afternoon, one of the newer technicians came to me crying.

She was a single mom raising two little boys.

She told me she didn't want the owner texting her late at night anymore because it was making her uncomfortable.

She asked if I could stop giving him her updated schedule.

I didn't know what to say.

A few months later, she quit.

Then another single mom was hired.

A few months after that...

The same pattern started all over again.

Maybe some of those women enjoyed the attention.

Maybe some were just afraid to upset the boss.

I honestly don't know.

What I do know is this...

His wife never seemed to suspect anything.

She trusted him completely.

She treated every employee like family.

She even babysat one technician's child so the mom could work an extra Saturday.

Every time I watched her do something kind, I felt guilty for knowing more than I wanted to know.

I've never actually seen him cheat.

I've never seen anything physical.

What I witnessed were repeated private lunches, constant personal messages, special treatment, and boundaries that looked very different depending on who the employee was.

Maybe there were innocent explanations.

Maybe there weren't.

After eight years behind that front desk, I've learned one thing.

The receptionist often knows the stories that never make it into the appointment book.

Some secrets are hidden in the spaces between the appointments.
