One Night Wasn't Enough · Newark, NJ

One night changed everything, and I never went back to that salon

One night changed everything, and I never went back to that salon
I still remember that Friday like it happened yesterday.

I had only been working at that salon for about six months.

The owner always liked to throw little after-work parties whenever someone had a birthday or when the shop had a really good week.

I almost didn't go.

I was tired and wanted to go home.

One of my coworkers kept saying,

Come on... just stay for a little while.

So I did.

Around midnight, only a few people were left.

The music was quieter.

People were cleaning up.

The owner asked if I could stay another ten minutes to help lock up because everyone else had already left.

I didn't think anything of it.

After all, he was my boss.

As we finished putting things away, he suddenly thanked me for being such a hardworking technician.

Then he said something that made me uncomfortable.

He told me I deserved someone who appreciated me... unlike my boyfriend.

I had never told him my relationship was having problems.

I asked how he knew.

He smiled and said,

People talk.

That answer gave me chills.

Then he stepped closer and told me he'd liked me for a long time.

I immediately told him I wasn't interested and that I needed to leave.

He apologized right away.

He didn't block the door.

He didn't touch me.

He simply said he hoped we could forget the conversation ever happened.

I drove home shaking.

The next morning, I convinced myself maybe it wasn't a big deal.

Maybe he was embarrassed too.

But Monday felt different.

He started giving me better customers than everyone else.

He bought me coffee without asking.

He found excuses to stop by my table several times a day.

The attention I once thought was kindness suddenly felt uncomfortable.

My coworkers started teasing me.

Some even joked that I had become the boss's favorite.

Nobody knew what had happened that Friday night.

I never told anyone.

Two weeks later, I handed in my resignation.

The owner looked surprised and asked if it was because of money.

I simply smiled and said I had found another opportunity.

The truth was...

One uncomfortable conversation didn't ruin my career.

But it changed the way I felt every time I walked through that salon door.

Sometimes one night is enough to realize a place no longer feels like work...

It no longer feels safe.
