I went to a casino to forget my divorce and ended up meeting the woman who changed my life
I'm 42 years old.

I'm American.

I got divorced two years ago.

We never had children, but the divorce still hit me harder than I expected.

For a long time, my routine was simple.

Work.

Go home.

Some weekends I'd drive to a casino, have a few drinks, play a little blackjack, and try not to think too much.

One Friday night, I noticed a young Vietnamese woman sitting a few seats away from me at the bar.

She wasn't gambling.

She was quietly drinking a soda while waiting for a friend.

Somehow we started talking.

She laughed at one of my terrible jokes, and before I knew it we'd been talking for almost an hour.

Her name was Linh.

Before we left, we exchanged phone numbers.

Over the next couple of weeks, we kept texting.

One day she casually mentioned she worked at a nail salon.

I laughed and told her I'd never had a manicure in my life.

She said,

Then maybe it's time.

The following Saturday, I walked into her salon.

The second she saw me, she smiled so big that several coworkers looked over.

After my appointment, we grabbed coffee.

Then dinner.

Then another dinner the following weekend.

It never felt forced.

It never felt rushed.

One thing I admired about Linh was how hard she worked.

She usually worked six days a week.

Most of the money she earned went to helping her family and paying her bills.

She wasn't looking for someone to rescue her.

She was already taking care of herself.

A few months later, I asked her if the age difference or our different backgrounds ever bothered her.

She smiled and said something I'll never forget.

I don't care where someone was born.

I care how they treat me when nobody's watching.

That answer stayed with me.

We've been together for over a year now.

Sometimes people look surprised when they see us together.

An American guy in his forties.

A younger Vietnamese nail technician.

Some assume they already know our story.

They're usually wrong.

We didn't meet through an app.

We didn't meet at work.

We met because two strangers happened to sit in the same casino on the same lonely Friday night.

Looking back, I thought I was going there to escape my past.

Instead, I accidentally found my future.
